Speaking the Life You Seek: The Power of Daily Speech in Living Our Faith

Words are highly politicized these days. It seems that our culture has not only developed an intolerance for dissenting ideas but has—thanks to social media and the ease with which people can say what’s on their mind— saturated our lives with reactionary hate-filled messages. It’s so easy to say what you feel at any given moment, but is it a good idea? Many words have also lost their meaning, as we throw speech around without a second thought.

When it comes to how you use words on a daily basis, it can have a tremendous impact on your life, your faith, and your relationship with God. Many people that come to our ministry want to get closer to God, to build a relationship with him, but ancillary to that is their desire to live a better life. Our search for grace and understanding is in our nature and it drives us towards the mystery of God and Jesus Christ. So how can you live a better life through words?

It is something Scripture touches on.

Every day, we face an onslaught of words directed at us, towards us. We listen at work, school, social gatherings to messages that we may or may not take issue with. These words elicit emotion and speaking in reactionary anger is easy. It is what the enemy wants. The enemy can use our tongue to provoke division, pain, to manifest petty complaints, to exaggerate, to show off. You cannot control the words that others speak, nor should you seek to do so, but you can control your words and the life they bring to the world.

The Fruit of Our Words — Spreading Life or Death With Speech

In Proverbs 18:21 it says:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

The proverb suggests that not only do we create the fruit of our words, but that fruit can spread life or it can spread death. The tongue is powerful. We can use that fruit for evil or we can use it to help others, support others, and speak the faith of God honestly.

Speaking Things Into Existence — Embracing the Power of Words

This may sound hyperbolic at first. It is not about shouting to the world “New Mercedes Benz please” and seeing the car appear on your driveway. You cannot simply declare that you want this or that and have it manifest out of thin air. And yet, the concept of speaking things into existence is a Christian one because Scripture describes how the words we use can drive our actions.

In Isaiah 55:11

“ So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”

So what does this mean? Words should not be thrown around as if they carry no weight. If you spend your time complaining and declaring that you are a victim and that you are suffering and that the world is unjust, you may find it difficult to get out of these circumstances. If you speak out constantly that you are doomed, that things are hopeless, you may begin to believe it. But what if you begin to speak with love and hope? What happens when your outward complaints turn into declarations of faith and trust in God? Words will guide your actions and define the world around you.

It is no accident that one of the most quoted and famous passages in all of Scripture says,

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All Things came to be through him and without him nothing came to be.”

The word was God. After all, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” We can speak our faith or we can denounce it, sometimes unknowingly. Do not trap yourself in your own words. Be purposeful with your speech. Do not allow the words of others to trap you.  If you seek to get closer to God, if you seek to live a better life, think carefully about the words you use every day. Do not speak death. Speak life. Speak your faith, direct your words towards God and you will see the difference that it makes.
